Chicago is full of attractions the entire family can enjoy, like the Field Museum, Navy Pier, the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Shedd Aquarium. A fun trip can depend, though, on the place you are staying. If you are traveling with children, you want to be in a place that will make them feel comfortable so you can all have a great trip.
Accommodations
Families need to spread out and there are hotels in Chicago that let you do that. The Palmer House Hilton, which celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2010, has 54 suites and even a 3,700-square-foot penthouse for the luxury traveler who wants the kids to have lots of room. At The James, even the standard guest rooms have sitting areas with separate couches, and it also has studio suites, lofts, one-bedroom apartments and loft penthouses. The Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago has 339 units, some as big as three bedrooms.
Location
If you are traveling with a family, look for a hotel that is close to the Chicago attractions you are interested in. The Palmer House Hilton is a short walk to the Art Institute and Michigan Avenue shopping. The James is within a 10-minute walk of most Chicago sightseeing and has the benefit of being on the block with Pizzeria Due, Starbucks and Trader Joe's for hungry kids. The Trump Chicago is within walking distance of the Children’s Museum near Navy Pier.
Extra Touches
If you want something extra special, the kids might enjoy the afternoon tea at the Palmer House Hilton, with its mini sandwiches, cookies and pastries. The James offers a Family Adventurer with Paul Frank package that includes tickets to attractions, bedtime milk and cookies and Paul Frank pajamas. At the Trump Chicago, the extensive kids' program includes children’s books, movies, video games and nanny services.
Considerations
Sometimes the more expensive hotels also charge for extras like Internet access and morning coffee, so find out exactly what’s included. If you are on a budget, a more inclusive option is the Comfort Inn & Suites Downtown Chicago, which has two-room suites and complimentary breakfast for guests.
